Dennis Biggs, Jr
Dennis' love of home design started at an early age. When he was in 6th grade his mother started taking classes in drafting at Platt College in Oklahoma City, OK. She had a small drafting table setup and her books from school. He would look thru thoughts books and see how to draw plans and started drawing house plans just for fun.
In the fall of 1994 Dennis was a junior in high school at Guthrie High School in Guthrie, OK. At the same time, he was also enrolled in the Drafting course at Meridian Technology Center in Stillwater, OK. It was during this time that one of Dennis' uncles came to him and asked if he could do the designs for a house that he and Dennis' aunt wanted to build in Guthrie, OK. Dennis' uncle made the suggestion that maybe he could use it as a class grade if his instructor approved it. Dennis took the sketch to school and asked the instructor, and the instructor gave his ok for this to happen. In doing this it gave Dennis the opportunity to learn how and what questions to ask to make the design of the home the best it could be. Throughout this process Dennis found out that his grandfather, who had been a builder for quite some time, would be the GC for the project. So, Dennis was able to draw on that experience to hone his drafting and design skills and provide what was really needed in the set of plans. When Dennis was finished, he received a 99 on the project. He asked his instructor why because he couldn't find any markups. His instructor said the only thing he could find wrong with it was he had used the wrong border.
During the summer between Dennis' Junior and Senior year the house was built on a corner section of his grandparents' land. During this time, he was able to go to the jobsite and ask questions and actually help with different aspects of the build process. Dennis gained hands on experience as to why certain things needed to be on the plans for things in the field to turn out the way they need to.
After Dennis graduated high school in 1995, he found employment at Star Building Solutions. While Dennis worked at Star Building Systems he worked as Pre-engineered Metal Building Detailer for about a year and a half. During this time, he learned how to draw and detail metal buildings. It was a real eye opener for Dennis as it wasn't something they taught in school. At the end of 1997 Dennis met his wife Sarah at a friend's graduation in Fort Worth not knowing not long after that they would marry. In the summer of 1998 not long after he got married an opportunity to move into a Business Service Representative position became available. So, he took his shot and advanced his carrier and gain valuable experience in how to talk to and discuss projects with a wide range of clients.
In 1999 Dennis and Sarah made the decision to move to Fort Worth. In October of 1999 Dennis began a 14-year journey working for Mesco Building Solutions. While working for Mesco Building Solutions Dennis went back to detailing Pre-engineered Metal Buildings and expanded his knowledge of drafting by taking over the production of their Mini-Storage Building Plans.
In 2013 Dennis left Mesco Building Solutions and during the summer of 2013 a builder in Granbury, TX wanted to open a plan shop to service all the builders in the area. An agreement was made between the 2 and The Plan Shop opened its doors. Dennis began designing house plans for both personal clients and builders alike. The summer of 2014 The Plan Shop was dissolved, and Dennis and his partner went their separate ways. Dennis decided to open Biggs Design and work from home.
Since then, in the 10 years since, Dennis has seen multitudes of people have come to him to create their plans and make the dream of building and owning their own home a reality.
That's Dennis' ultimate goal. To turn someone's dream home from a sketch on a piece of paper, to a full set of buildable plans, to a physical home that they can live in and enjoy for many years to come.
